Registration is now open for the second event of the Winter 2018 Series of Evenings @ Government House on 27 February 2018 featuring a presentation by Dr. Sally Ross who will speak on the History of Acadian Schools in Nova Scotia: Challenges and Victories

Using as bookends 1758, the year of the first legislative assembly in Nova Scotia, and the present, Dr. Ross will highlight the challenges the Acadians have faced in their efforts to preserve their language in an educational system which, until the 1970s, was designed for the anglophone majority. Today, 2 nd February 2018, marks the 170 th anniversary of the first Responsible Government in the British Empire (outside of the United Kingdom). The first Executive Council, which was chosen exclusively from the party holding the majority, met in the Drawing Room of Government House on 2 nd February 1848. Evenings @ Government House – Winter 2018 Series

Registration is now open for the first event of the Winter 2018 Series of Evenings @ Government House on 13 February 2018, featuring a presentation by Vanessa Fells from the Black Loyalist Heritage Centre.

This year’s African Heritage Month theme is “Educate, Unite, Celebrate Community”. In keeping with that theme, Vanessa Fells of the Black Loyalist Heritage Centre will give a presentation on the historically important group known as the Black Loyalists. Her presentation will provide an overview on the history of the Black Loyalists highlighting their arrival to Nova Scotia in 1783. Message of Condolence on the Passing of Mi’kmaq Grand Council Grand Chief Ben Sylliboy

Mrs. LeBlanc and I were saddened to learn of the death of Grand Chief Ben Sylliboy on Thursday, 30 November 2017. Grand Chief Sylliboy’s leadership of the Mi’kmaq nation over the past 25 years was instrumental in ensuring that Aboriginal and Treaty rights were implemented and gained greater recognition. He will be remembered for his tireless efforts to promote the spirituality and culture of the Mi’kmaq.
