Nova Scotia has a long and contradictory history of strong suffrage support and strong suffrage opposition. Most notably, in 1893, a relatively broad bill to give qualified Nova Scotia women the vote passed second reading in the Nova Scotia Legislature, but was unscrupulously rejected at the committee stage. It seems the near passing of that bill – long before comparable political success in other provinces – may have shored up the opposition in Nova Scotia so effectively that it took another 25 years to muster the necessary support to get the bill through the final stage. Today we mark Tartan Day where we recognize and celebrate the contributions of the Scots and their descendants in Canada. On October 21, 2010, the Minister of Canadian Heritage officially declared April 6 as Tartan Day. It is celebrated on April 6 because it is the anniversary of the signing of Declaration of Arbroath in 1320, the Scottish declaration of independence. In Canada, the day originated in the late 1980s in Nova Scotia, where it was declared an official day by the provincial government. It then spread across the country, with many provinces joining over the years.

In celebration of Tartan Day that occurs on 6 April 2018, the Amethyst Scottish Dancers of Nova Scotia will perform “Celtic Wish” where the audience will be treated to lively music, exciting dancing, and colourful costumes. This will be an opportunity for the Amethyst dancers to share their love of dance and music. Celtic Wish will include both traditional Scottish dances as well as several modern choreographed highland and step dance numbers. This event is free and open to the public.
