Registration is now open for the first event of the Winter 2018 Series of Evenings @ Government House on 13 February 2018, featuring a presentation by Vanessa Fells from the Black Loyalist Heritage Centre.

This year’s African Heritage Month theme is “Educate, Unite, Celebrate Community”. In keeping with that theme, Vanessa Fells of the Black Loyalist Heritage Centre will give a presentation on the historically important group known as the Black Loyalists. Her presentation will provide an overview on the history of the Black Loyalists highlighting their arrival to Nova Scotia in 1783. Message of Condolence on the Passing of Mi’kmaq Grand Council Grand Chief Ben Sylliboy

Mrs. LeBlanc and I were saddened to learn of the death of Grand Chief Ben Sylliboy on Thursday, 30 November 2017. Grand Chief Sylliboy’s leadership of the Mi’kmaq nation over the past 25 years was instrumental in ensuring that Aboriginal and Treaty rights were implemented and gained greater recognition. He will be remembered for his tireless efforts to promote the spirituality and culture of the Mi’kmaq. Registration is still open for the sixth and final event of the Fall 2017 Series of Evenings @ Government House on 21 November 2017 featuring a Halifax Explosion Commemorative Concert by the Dalhousie Symphony Orchestra.

Under the direction of conductor/composer Peter Allen, Dalhousie Symphony Orchestra will perform a concert to commemorate the Halifax Explosion. This event will also feature readings from the diary of Frank Baker who was onboard HMCS Acadia at the time of the explosion and a reading of her poem marking the Halifax Explosion by Halifax Poet Laureate Rebecca Thomas. As Nova Scotians gather around the province on Remembrance Day we will do so in the sacred remembrance of the sons and daughters of Canada who were lost in the service to their Crown and Country. This year we celebrated the 150 th Anniversary of Canadian Confederation.
