2019 Lieutenant Governor’s Community Spirit Award – Call for Submissions

The call for submissions for this year's award will be announced on March 1 st , 2019. The award, established by then Lieutenant Governor Mayann Francis in 2007, celebrates the power, strength and diversity of communities across Nova Scotia. The award is administered by the Department of Communities, Culture and Heritage and up to four communities are honoured each year. Recipients are chosen by a selection committee based on community applications that best fit the award’s criteria. Heritage Day 2019 Honours Nova Scotian Maud Lewis

Monday, February 18, 2019 is Heritage Day in Nova Scotia. In 2019, Heritage Day honours Nova Scotian born folk artist Maud Lewis. Maud Lewis was born Maud Kathleen Dowley to John and Agnes Dowley, in the town of Yarmouth, March 7, 1903. Maud lived with her husband Everett Lewis in a small house in Marshalltown, Nova Scotia. Despite living with arthritis, and in poverty most of her life, her folk art paintings garnered much attraction and interest.
