National Indigenous Peoples Day - 2018

Thursday, June 21, 2018

Today, 21 June 2018, is National Indigenous Peoples Day.  On this day, we honour Canada’s Indigenous peoples.  We celebrate the First Nations, Inuit and Métis Indigenous peoples and their heritage and culture and the special role they have in defining Canada.

In Nova Scotia, we honour the Mi’kmaq people.  We respect and honour the Mi’kmaq who inhabited these lands for 15,000 years and who first welcomed European explorers in the early 1600’s.   The Crown in Nova Scotia, as represented by the Lieutenant Governor, cherishes the special relationship with the Mi’kmaq.
