The Queen served as a mechanic in the Auxiliary Territorial Service, British Army from 1945 to 1949.  She was the only female member of the Royal Family to join the Armed Services as a full-time active member.  During her service she drove and maintained vehicles.  Her Majesty is the only living Head of State who served in the Second World War.
