Message from the Lieutenant Governor on Treaty Day 2018

Monday, October 1, 2018

As The Queen’s representative in Nova Scotia, it my pleasure to extend warm greetings on the occasion of Treaty Day 2018.

This morning, as a symbol of utmost respect and honour, the Mi’kmaq flag was raised in a ceremony at Government House.  Joining me in the Flag Raising was Grand Keptin Antle (Andrew) Denny.  The Mi’kmaq flag will fly at Government House for the full duration of Mi’kmaq History Month.

Since my installation as Lieutenant Governor in June 2017, and following in the footsteps of my Vice-Regal predecessors, I have been determined to honour and nurture the special relationship that exists between the Crown in Nova Scotia and the First Nations of this province.   The history, culture and heritage of the Mi’kmaq contribute significantly to Nova Scotia’s identity and it is important that all Nova Scotians pause to recognize and celebrate the importance of Treaty Day and Mi’kmaq History Month.

The Honourable Arthur J. LeBlanc, ONS, QC
Lieutenant Governor
