Mi'kmaw Language Day

Monday, May 12, 2025

Today is the official launch Mi'kmaw Language Day. We celebrate the strength, perseverance, and spirit of Mi'kmaq communities, along with the vital role of the Mi'kmaw Language in preserving identity and cultural heritage.

In 2022, the Mi’kmaw Language Act established principles for preserving and promoting Mi’kmaw, the first language spoken in the traditional territory of the Mi'kmaq people, in what is today Nova Scotia. The Act came into force on October 1, 2022, to coincide with Treaty Day, paying tribute to the unique and special relationship between the Crown and the Mi’kmaq and to commemorate treaties of peace and friendship.
