60th Anniversary of the Korean War Armistice

Wednesday, July 24, 2013

On the 60th anniversary of the armistice that ended the Korean War, we remember and honour the 26,000 Canadians who served in Korea and the more than 500 Canadians who lost their lives in this terrible conflict.

At a time when many were still recovering from the scars of the Second World War, Canadians selflessly answered the call from the United Nations to take action against North Korean aggression.  Their bravery and sacrifice, along with that of soldiers from South Korea and allied countries, secured freedom and democracy in South Korea and ushered in a new era of co-operation and friendship between allied States that continues today.

We are right to remember Canada’s contribution to the Korean War with pride and dignity.  We give thanks and respect to those who served with such courage and let us never forget their lasting impact on Canada and the world.
