Eighty years ago, on June 6, 1944, the Allied forces launched Operation OVERLORD during the Second World War. It stands as the largest combined military operation of all time. Thousands of Canadians and Newfoundlanders, representing all branches of the military, contributed to the operation's execution.

Today, we pause to honor the courage of the individuals who gallantly fought in this monumental military operation. Their commitment was unwavering as they fought under the banner of King and Country, resisting the forces of tyranny and oppression. Their mission was clear: to secure peace, uphold freedom, and safeguard democracy for future generations of Canadians.

These brave individuals, alongside their Allied counterparts, played a pivotal role in reshaping the course of history through their remarkable deeds. Their triumph in the Battle of Normandy ultimately led to the end of the Second World War in Europe, a conflict that had raged for nearly six years.

As a society, we owe an immeasurable debt of gratitude to those who made the ultimate sacrifice and to those who fought and returned from battle.
