Message from the Lieutenant Governor on Canada Day

Sunday, July 28, 2013

Dear friends,

Canada Day is a time for family and friends to come together in celebration of the values, the people and the institutions that make us proud to call ourselves Canadian.  We are a diverse country, both geographically and culturally, yet we are united in our commitment to democracy, human rights and compassion for our fellow citizens.

Nova Scotia has played, and continues to play, a significant role in the progress of our great nation.  Our province is the birthplace of responsible government in Canada, we have a long and proud military tradition, some of the best musicians and artists in the world call Nova Scotia their home, and most importantly, our communities are strong, vibrant and caring.

As Lieutenant Governor, I have the privilege of meeting Nova Scotians of all ages and from all walks of life, who find countless ways of supporting their local communities.  They are often the unsung heroes among us but they are a large part of what makes Canada the peaceful, welcoming and prosperous place it is today.  So as we celebrate all the wonderful and unique elements of our Canadian identities on the occasion of our national holiday, I hope you will also celebrate the quiet champions in your communities and be inspired to become one.

On behalf of all Nova Scotians and Her Majesty The Queen, I wish you all a Happy Canada Day.

Brigadier-General The Hon. J.J. Grant, CMM, ONS, CD (Ret’d)
Lieutenant Governor
