Passing of Mrs. Rose Marie Abraham

Tuesday, May 7, 2013

Mrs. Grant and I were saddened to learn of the passing of Mrs. Rose Marie Abraham, wife of The Honourable Alan R. Abraham, CM, ONS, CD.  During her time as Vice-Regal consort, Mrs. Abraham was a stalwart supporter of her husband throughout his distinguished tenure as Lieutenant Governor of our province from 1984 to 1989.  Mrs. Abraham's personal touch and care helped to make Government House a welcoming and inviting place for all of their guests.

Born in Belliveau Cove and proud of her Acadian roots, Mrs. Abraham brought her interest in her cultural heritage to the vice-regal residence, proudly displaying the Acadian Flag out front, and also by encouraging awareness of Acadian traditions and community values.

Mrs. Abraham played an important role in aiding Mr. Abraham during no less than six high-level visits that were paid to our province, welcoming members of the Royal Family including; His Royal Highness Prince Michael of Kent, His Royal Highness Prince Andrew, His Royal Highness Prince Edward and The Queen's sister, Her Royal Highness Princess Margaret.  Distinguished international visitors included His Holiness Pope John Paul II and Her Majesty Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands.

Her service to the Crown and Canada was recognized by her appointment as an Officer of the Order of St. John and later the Queen Elizabeth Golden Jubilee Medal.

On behalf of Mrs. Grant, myself and the entire household at Government House, I extend our heartfelt condolences to Mr. Abraham and the extended Abraham family.

Brigadier-General The Honourable J.J. Grant, CMM, ONS, CD (Ret'd)
