Appointments to the role of Lieutenant Governor are commonly for a period of not less than five years. Incumbents remain in office until a replacement is sworn in.

Individuals appointed Lieutenant Governor have served their country and/or province with distinction for many years. An appointment carries with it the title of 'Her Honour' or 'His Honour' during tenure as Lieutenant Governor, and 'The Honourable' for life.
