75th Anniversary of Victory in Europe Day
Today, 8 May 2020, we mark the 75th Anniversary of Victory in Europe Day (V-E Day).
In 1939, forces of Nazi Germany invaded Poland and so commenced nearly six years of fighting in the Second World War. Britain entered the war against Germany on 3 September 1939, and one week later Canada entered the war on 10 September 1939. On 7 May 1945, the Nazi German Army offered a complete and unconditional surrender to the Allied Forces and victory in Europe was attained. The next day, the people of the Allied nations rejoiced after many years of great hardship and sacrifice.
More than one million Canadians and Newfoundlanders served in uniform, both at home and around the world. Over 45,000 made the ultimate sacrifice and another 55,000 were wounded.
Today we pause in sacred remembrance of those who bravely fought to free the world from tyranny.
