Message from the Lieutenant Governor on Treaty Day 2014

Wednesday, October 1, 2014

Treaty Day Flag Raising Government House As Her Majesty the Queen’s representative in Nova Scotia, it my pleasure to extend warm greetings on the occasion of Treaty Day 2014.

Today we affirm the bond of friendship between the Crown and the Mi’kmaw Nation and pay tribute to the rich cultural traditions of the Mi’kmaq people in Nova Scotia.  In this centennial year of the outbreak of the First World War, let us remember the First Nations soldiers who were among the first to answer the call to serve.  Their sacrifice on the battlefields and at home, is an important part of our shared history that must never be forgotten.

For the month of October, the Mi’kmaq Flag will be flown at Government House as a symbol of the special and longstanding relationship between the First people of Nova Scotia and the Crown.  It serves as a tangible reminder to visitors to the ceremonial home of all Nova Scotians of the diversity of our province and the central role played in the history and development of our province by the Mi’kmaq people.

On behalf of Her Majesty The Queen, I wish you a wonderful Treaty Day and Mi’kmaq History Month.

Brigadier-General The Hon. J.J. Grant, CMM, ONS, CD (Ret’d)
