Message from the Lieutenant Governor on the passing of Nelson Mandela

Friday, December 6, 2013

Mrs. Grant and I join Nova Scotians and the citizens of all nations in mourning the death and celebrating the life of Nelson Mandela.

A man of great moral courage, Mr. Mandela’s unwavering belief in the inherent dignity of all persons and the transformative power of reconciliation brought an end to apartheid in South Africa and forever changed the world’s understanding of the inevitability of conflict.

Mr. Mandela has left a legacy of peace, optimism and forgiveness for which we are eternally grateful and immensely humbled.  His life’s work will live on for generations to come through the quest for more compassionate and just societies in all parts of the globe.

On behalf of all Nova Scotians I extend my sincere condolences to the people of South Africa and Mr. Mandela’s family and friends on the loss of a great leader, a great man and a great friend to all.

Brigadier-General The Hon. J.J. Grant, CMM, ONS, CD (Ret’d)
Lieutenant Governor
