EVENT DETAILS: The Lieutenant Governor of Nova Scotia is pleased to invite the public to a screening of the documentary "Pirates & Privateers" with producer Edward Peill from Tell Tale Productions Inc. and writer and director Geoff D'Eon.  Following the screening,  the Lieutenant Governor will host an informal reception until 8:30pm where guests will have the opportunity to meet Their Honours and the filmmakers.

Pirates & Privateers

Hundreds of years ago, the secluded coves and inlets of the Maritimes were the perfect hiding places for pirates avoiding detection by the King’s navy. Pirates and Privateers introduces the viewer to several notorious pirates who plundered Atlantic Canada during the 1700’s and tells a story that recalls the blunderbuss, the cutlass, evil deeds, and supposed buried treasure.

Not many Canadians know what is meant by the word “privateer”, even though privateering was a significant social and financial force in times of war, whether against the Spanish, the French, or the Americans during the War of 1812. Pirates and Privateers explains how the business of privateering worked, as practiced in one of Canada’s most successful privateering centres: Liverpool Nova Scotia.

Edward Peill, Producer

Edward Peill entered the film and TV industry in 1996 after having worked in a variety of sectors including wine making in France, shipping in Cyprus, commodities trading in Vancouver, and crewing aboard private yachts in the Caribbean and South Pacific. Prior to establishing Tell Tale Productions Inc. in 2003, Edward oversaw the production of more than 40 hours of drama, documentaries, lifestyle, and comedy series including the wildly successful Trailer Park Boys and the highly rated verité documentary series Tall Ship Chronicles. Recent and upcoming documentary projects include BorderLine (Super Channel), Counterfeit Culture (CBC), Our Lady (Vision TV) and Facebook Follies (CBC).

Geoff D'Eon, Writer & Director

Geoff D'Eon has been making award-winning television programs in Nova Scotia for almost 30 years, as a journalist, as a television director, and as an executive producer. In 1993, Geoff was one of the producers who put their heads together and created an innovative half-hour show that has stood the test of time: This Hour Has 22 Minutes. Geoff's particular speciality was the ambushing of federal politicians - wherever they were hiding. He says amongst his oddest assignments was directing the performance of Canadian Prime Ministers in comedy sketches … five different Prime Ministers in all. Geoff also produced and directed Rick Mercer's Talking To Americans, which to this day holds the distinction of being the top-rated comedy special in Canadian television history. Geoff is also a huge music fan, having produced for eight years the nationally-televised and award-wining East Coast Music Awards. These days, Geoff has his own company here in Halifax. He writes and directs network documentaries and his company produces the Halifax Comedy Fest, which every year makes Canadians laugh, from coast-to-coast-to-coast.
