2022 Order of Nova Scotia Recipients
Five Nova Scotians who have made significant contributions to the province in a diverse range of fields, from public health to business mentorship, have been appointed to the Order of Nova Scotia.
His Honour the Honourable Arthur J. LeBlanc, Chancellor of the Order of Nova Scotia, released the names of the Order’s newest members today, December 12.
“It is my great pleasure to appoint five exemplary citizens to the Order of Nova Scotia,” said the Lieutenant Governor. “Their service and contributions have made long-lasting impressions on our historic record, cultural identity, economy and well-being. I thank each appointee for outstanding dedication to their professions and communities.”
The 2022 recipients of the Order of Nova Scotia are:
-- Colonel (Ret'd) John Boileau, Bedford: author, historian; recognized for championing Nova Scotia’s rich history
-- Kenzie MacNeil, Sydney: posthumously recognized for outstanding contributions to the arts through theatre and music, including his song The Island
-- Rustum Southwell, Halifax: business leader and founding executive director of the Black Business Initiative; recognized for creating mentorship and professional opportunities for African Nova Scotians
-- Dr. Robert Strang, Fall River: Nova Scotia’s Chief Medical Officer of Health; recognized for leadership throughout the COVID-19 pandemic and contributions to the health field
-- Hope Swinimer, Seaforth: founder and Director of Hope for Wildlife; recognized for her work with wildlife rehabilitation and service to the natural environment.
In early 2023, an investiture ceremony will be held at Government House where Lt-Gov. LeBlanc will present the new members with their insignia and appointment scroll.

-- The Order of Nova Scotia is the highest honour in the Province of Nova Scotia, recognizing people in many fields of endeavour who have distinguished themselves and made lasting contributions
-- 115 members have been invested into the Order of Nova Scotia since it was established in June 2001
-- Appointments to the order are made by the Lieutenant Governor on the recommendation of an independent advisory council
-- The Protocol and Honours Secretariat is accepting nominations for the 2023 honours list until March 17, 2023
