Message from the Lieutenant Governor on the 90th Anniversary of the RCAF

Tuesday, April 1, 2014

As the representative of Her Majesty The Queen in Nova Scotia, it is a pleasure to congratulate the current and former members of the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) on the occasion of their 90th anniversary.

From the heroic exploits of those members of the Canadian Expeditionary Force who served in the Royal Flying Corps during the First World War, came the creation of the Royal Canadian Air Force. These pioneers of armed flight were instrumental in the founding of a professional air force that has helped to protect Canada’s skies for nearly a century. Working closely with our Commonwealth and foreign allies, members of the RCAF have played an important role representing Canada and Canadian values around the globe.

During the Second World War, the Korean War, through countless peacekeeping operations and most recently with ‘Operation Mobile’ over Libya and our concluded mission in Afghanistan, the men and women of the RCAF have performed their duty with courage, professionalism and dignity.

As the home of the first powered flight in the Commonwealth, it should come as no surprise that Nova Scotia and Nova Scotians have played in important part in the history of the RCAF. We are fortunate to have two RCAF Wings in our province, both which enhance the wellbeing and security of all Canadians.

On behalf of all Nova Scotians it is my pleasure to wish the RCAF a Happy 90th Birthday.

Brigadier-General The Hon. J.J. Grant, CMM, ONS, CD (Ret’d)
Lieutenant Governor
