Message from the Lieutenant Governor on Treaty Day

Tuesday, October 1, 2013

It gives me great pleasure to extend warm greetings to all on the occasion of Treaty Day 2013.

Today we affirm the bond of friendship between the Crown and the Mi’kmaw Nation and pay tribute to the rich cultural traditions of the Mi’kmaq people in Nova Scotia.  The spirit of this day is one of celebrating peaceful and harmonious relations between neighbours.  Unquestionably, it is a spirit we must keep alive each and every day of the year.

Treaty Day also marks the beginning of Mi’kmaq History Month, an opportunity for all Nova Scotians to take part in a variety of educational and cultural events so that we may deepen our understanding of Mi’kmaq heritage and work together towards a bright and prosperous future.

On behalf of Her Majesty The Queen, I wish you a wonderful Treaty Day and Mi’kmaq History Month.

Brigadier-General The Hon. J.J. Grant, CMM, ONS, CD (Ret’d)
Lieutenant Governor
