A Message from the Lieutenant Governor - Remembering the 22 Nova Scotians Who Died on April 18 and 19, 2020

Sunday, April 18, 2021

It has been one year since this province was left reeling from the largest mass shooting in Canadian history that commenced in Portapique, Nova Scotia.  All Canadians were saddened and shocked by the death of 22 innocent people. Those directly affected are still struggling to cope with their tragic loss, and in a province where the population is relatively small, there were few people who were not impacted in some manner by this tragedy.

At that time and in the aftermath, I was greatly touched by the ways the people of Nova Scotia rallied around those who were affected, and, through their collective actions, revealed their compassion for their fellow citizens.  I was also impressed by the many people who flew Canadian and Nova Scotia flags and displayed our provincial tartan ribbons as a sign of support and to show Canada and the world that our beloved province was “Nova Scotia Strong”.   To all Nova Scotians, you can take pride in your remarkable resiliency and kindness.

To the loved ones of those who died, we know that the pain of your enormous loss will never disappear.  Patsy and I hope that you continue to find comfort in the happy memories of your loved ones. Those who died will always be remembered.

The Honourable Arthur J. LeBlanc, ONS, QC
Lieutenant Governor
