Message from the Lieutenant Governor on Treaty Day 2020

Thursday, October 1, 2020

Today, I was honoured to raise the Flag of the Mi’kmaq Grand Council during a ceremony at Government House. This flag will fly for the entire month of October in honour of  Mi’kmaq History Month.

Although the normal events held on Treaty Day have been limited due to the current COVID-19 pandemic, I am pleased to learn that this important day will be marked in a virtual manner.  In support of this virtual format, I am honoured to provide a video message, which can be viewed at the following link:  https://youtu.be/pzLYQ-1RMd0

This morning’s flag raising event is more than a ceremony, it is a signal to all Nova Scotians that Mi’kmaw history, heritage and culture are important and that we should strive to honour this significant part of who we are in this province. Today’s ceremony also underlines the importance of the Crown – Mi’kmaq relationship, which I have endeavoured to focus on during my time as Lieutenant Governor.

As The Queen’s representative in Nova Scotia, it my pleasure to extend warm greetings on the occasion of Treaty Day 2020. On this day and throughout Mi’kmaq History Month, we should all learn about the indigenous peoples who inhabited this land long before European settlement.

We are all Treaty People.

The Honourable Arthur J. LeBlanc, ONS, QC
Lieutenant Governor
