August 9, 2007 Lieutenant Governor Francis acted as Reviewing Officer at the Peacekeeping Day 2007 Parade of the Canadian Association of Veterans in UN Peacekeeping, Major General Lewis MacKenzie Chapter. She attended a luncheon following the Parade. The events were held at the Cape Breton Regional Municipal Civic Centre in Sydney. She addressed the Luncheon as Honorary Member of the Chapter and paid homage to the men and women who have defended peace throughout the world since Canada’s peacekeeping mission began more than 50 years ago. August 5, 2007 Her Honour attended a Freedom Festival Gospel Concert at the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic, commemorating the return to Sierra Leone of Black Loyalists from Nova Scotia. A copy of an significant water colour painting (circa 1792-93) was presented to Her Honour showing the fleet of 15 Halifax ships that carried roughly 1,100 black Loyalists from Nova Scotia to Sierra Leone in 1792 moored in Sierra Leone Harbour, just prior to disembarking their passengers. These Black Loyalist settlers founded Freetown, now the capital city of Sierra Leone, on the shores of the harbour. |

July 5, 2007 Her Honour participated in a Wreath Laying ceremony at the Norwegian Naval Memorial on the Halifax waterfront with the Honorary Consul of Norway, Mr. Steinar Engeset. Her Honour inspected His Majesty The King’s Guard of Norway. She spoke of the strong Norwegian presence in Nova Scotia during the war. She paid tribute to the Norwegian Merchant fleet that sailed out of Nova Scotia and the 570 Norwegian ships and nearly 4,000 seaman lost and 6,000 wounded. Lieutenant Governor Francis hosted a reception at Province House to recognize the 2007 International Gathering of the Clans in Halifax. She welcomed participants and congratulated the Federation of Scottish Clans of Nova Scotia for organizing such a major celebration of the Scottish heritage and culture which has been an integral part of our province for nearly 400 years. As Honorary Patron of the Royal Nova Scotia International Tattoo Society, Her Honour attended the Tattoo Society Chairman’s Reception and Dinner held in Halifax. She congratulated the organizers for their incredible efforts throughout the year and the talented performers from around the world who came together to bring such a spectacular performance to Nova Scotia. |

July 1, 2007 Her Honour participated in the official Opening Ceremonies of the provincial Canada Day celebrations at the Halifax Citadel National Historic Site. She spoke of the vast natural wealth Canadians have used to forge a nation that has become the envy of the world, of immigrants from around the world who have brought a vitality and worldliness that has become part of our shared national culture, and of the national goal to ensure our country is one of inclusion for all its citizens, regardless of their heritage, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation or degree of physical challenge. Her Honour presided at the Court of Canadian Citizenship ceremony held at the Royal Canadian Legion Calais Branch 162 in Sackville as part of Sackville Patriot Days. She administered the oath to 40 new citizens from 28 countries. Her Honour spoke about the shared common values, the rights and responsibilities, and the loyalty to Canada that defines the meaning of being a Canadian. Lieutenant Governor Francis attended a VIP Reception and presided at the official opening of the 29th Annual Royal Nova Scotia International Tattoo, of which she is Honorary Patron. Her Honour spoke to the principal theme of this year’s Tattoo - the commemoration of both Vimy and Afghanistan and the common thread of bravery of the men and women of our Armed Forces who are engaged in a struggle to bring the peace and security that we enjoy to others. |
