She spoke of the eight communities that have received the Lieutenant Governor’s Community Spirit Award since its launch two years ago. She expressed her deep respect for the work of black social workers in addressing social problems in all areas of the black community and in their commitment to ensure equitable social justice for all citizens. |

August 26, 2009 Her Honour presented the Lieutenant Governor’s Greenwing Award of Ducks Unlimited Canada to Francis and Pauline Verstraten at a ceremony in Province House, Halifax. She praised the recipients for being leaders in the Agriculture Biodiversity Conservation Plan and establishing an environmentally sound and sustainable agricultural operation as a national model. Her Honour thanked Ducks Unlimited for helping to conserve more than 10 million acres of wetlands across North America, thus protecting waterfowl and improving our water quality and the environment. |

August 24, 2009 On behalf of Her Excellency the Governor General and Chancellor of the Order of Canada, Lieutenant Governor Francis presided at the Investiture of Mrs. Joyce Carman Barkhouse, CM, as a Member of the Order of Canada, at a ceremony held in Bridgewater. Mrs. Barkhouse was recognized for her contributions to literature, and in particular children’s literature. Her Honour expressed the gratitude of all Canadians to Mrs. Barkhouse for giving tirelessly of her time to young people, visiting schools all over the nation and sharing her love of reading and writing with others. Her Honour brought greetings to the Royal Canadian Golf Association Senior Ladies Golf Tournament Dinner in Bridgewater. She wished the golfers well in their competition. As Grand Master of the Order of Good Time, Her Honour invested visitors to the province as members of this social club, established in Port Royal in 1606 on the recommendation of Samuel de Champlain, the famous explorer and future Governor of New France, to maintain spirits during the long winter months. |

July 18, 2009 Her Honour presented the Lieutenant Governor’s Community Spirit Award to Brookfield, Colchester County. She praised the people of Brookfield for embodying the spirit of the award since its founding more than 200 years ago - a place that works for all citizens, where citizens are engaged, active and proud. Her Honour was the Keynote Speaker celebrations marking the 170th Anniversary of Lucasville United Baptist Church. She recalled the history of the common people who founded the church during times of struggle and indignities only 30 years after slavery had been declared illegal across the British Empire but was still practiced in many places. She commended the congregation for retaining the dignity, spirit of community and abiding faith in God of the church’s founding people. |

September 12, 2008 Her Honour attended the Change of Command Ceremony of RCMP “H” Division, from Assistant Commissioner Ian Atkins to Assistant Commissioner Steve Graham at the Halifax Armories. She welcomed A/C Graham and thanked A/C Atkins for his years of service to the people of Nova Scotia and his support to the office of the Lieutenant Governor. |

September 11, 2008 Her Honour hosted the Lieutenant Governor Design Awards in Architecture. She congratulated the Award winners on a wide variety of projects ranging from a fossil centre to private homes to the Hollis Street Gate of Government House. She praised the Association for maintaining a high standard of design and architecture in the province. Mr. M. Gilles Courregelongues, the new Consul General of France in Moncton, made a courtesy call on the Lieutenant Governor. Her Honour brought greetings to the Atlantic Film Festival Opening ceremonies and screening of the opening film at the Oxford Theatre in Halifax. She congratulated film industry professionals whose work was showcased at the Festival, and the Canadian film industry as a whole for the many strengths Canada has to offer the international film community. |

September 9, 2008 Her Honour hosted polio survivor Ramesh Ferris and his Cycle to Walk Team from Yukon Territory during their stopover in Halifax on a cross-Canada tour to help eradicate polio disease. |

September 8, 2008 Her Honour hosted religious leaders from the community at an Interfaith Blessing and Dialogue to mark the 2nd Anniversary of her term as Lieutenant Governor. She spoke of reflection and prayer as a powerful resource for all community leaders. |

September 7, 2008 Her Honour brought greetings to the Winners Walk of Hope for Ovarian Cancer, held at Point Pleasant Park in Halifax. She thanked organizers and participants for helping to raise awareness of the importance for better screening, early detection and treatment of the “whispering disease”. |
