Patronage / membership listing
As part of a commitment to community service, a Lieutenant Governor can be honorary patron to – or honorary president of – a number of local organizations that help enrich the lives of Nova Scotians.
Vice-regal patronage derives from the concept of the Crown as the source of the highest honours and awards granted in our society. Honorary patronage is granted to worthy organizations that dedicate their efforts to the betterment of their community. It's a sign of the Lieutenant Governor's support for the work of the organization.
The Lieutenant Governor, as the Sovereign's representative in the province, follows the Sovereign's example, by offering support and encouragement to the public and voluntary service sectors. Through involvement with charitable and non-profit organizations, the Lieutenant Governor helps to recognize their contributions and raise awareness of their achievements.
The organizations cover a wide variety of subjects that strive for community engagement: music, arts, sports, culture, heritage, youth, healthy living, the environment and more.
The guidelines for the granting of honorary patronage are governed by the Instructions adopted by the Department of Canadian Heritage for Lieutenant Governors across the country. The Lieutenant Governor's patronage cannot be associated in direct connection with fundraising campaigns or fundraising events.
Honorary patronage is only granted by the current Lieutenant Governor. All patronages expire with the term of the Lieutenant Governor. Organizations who wish to request the continued support from the incoming Lieutenant Governor must re-apply. The Lieutenant Governor does not normally accept new honorary patronages requests during the final year of their term in office.
If you would like to submit a request to receive the Lieutenant Governor's patronage for your organization please complete the Patronage Request Form.
His Honour Brigadier-General The Honourable J.J. Grant, CMM, ONS, CD (Ret'd), extends patronage to these provincial or local not-for-profit organizations that promote good work and encourage strong community spirit:
